Description
[VALBONNAIS (Jean-Pierre Moret de Bourchenu, Marquis of)]. A History of the Dauphiné and of the princes who bore the title of Dauphin, particularly those of the third line, descended from the Barons of La Tour-du-Pin, under the last of whom their estates were transferred to the Crown of France. It contains a series of documents arranged in chronological order to serve as evidence of the events, from which one may glean various insights into the history of France, the Popes of Avignon, and the neighbouring states and provinces. With several observations on ancient customs and traditions, and on the families. Geneva, Fabri and Barrillot, 1722, 2 folio volumes, [8]-XII-22-2-414 pp. (note that pages numbered 295 to 298 are combined on two leaves); [2]-628 pp.; with 9 plates, including 6 seals engraved by Daudet, a large fold-out map engraved with a burin by Berey after Guillaume de l’Isle, and a fold-out genealogical table, bound in cream-coloured paper cardboard (contemporary binding). Corners worn, as are the upper cap of Volume 1 and the lower cap of Volume 2. A greatly expanded second edition of this monumental history, first published in 1711 as a single volume. Illustrated with 9 plates, including 6 of seals engraved by Daudet, a large folding map engraved with a burin by Berey after Guillaume de l’Isle, and a folding genealogical chart. A copy as published, untrimmed.
