Description
BAUDELAIRE (Charles). *Les Fleurs du mal*. Paris, Poulet-Malassis et de Broise, 1857, in-12, blue Bradel-style half-percaline, spine decorated with a gilt fleur-de-lis, red morocco title label, case and modern blue cloth slipcase (contemporary binding).
First edition and second edition bound together.
A fine copy sent by Baudelaire to Émile Deschanel, a memento from an old schoolmate.
Émile Deschanel (1819–1904), father of the future President Paul Deschanel, was a classmate of Charles Baudelaire at the Lycée Louis-le-Grand.
Exiled to Brussels in 1852 for his opposition to Louis Napoleon, he gave lectures on literature attended by, amongst others, Victor Hugo, Edgar Quinet and Alexandre Dumas.
A copy extensively annotated in pencil by Émile Deschanel. The recipient of the book has carefully pasted, at the bottom of the half-title page, an article from *L’Indépendant* setting out the grounds for the judgement of the Tribunal de la Seine, which sentenced Baudelaire to a fine and ordered the withdrawal of six poems.
Our edition is in every respect identical to the first printing, including the typographical errors and the condemned poems. The only omission is the extremely rare error on page 12, where ‘s’enhardissent’ should be ‘s’enhardissant’.
The second edition, bound as a continuation: expanded to include 35 new poems and adorned with a portrait of the author drawn and engraved by Bracquemond. Paris, Poulet-Malassis et de Broise, 1861.
Copy with generous margins: 125 x 195 mm.
Contemporary binding from the second edition (1861), without the cover. The endpapers have been replaced, whilst the original endpapers have been retained.
Provenance: Librairie Lardanchet, 1983. Indicates that the binding is by Féchoz.
