Description
FAIVRE (Alexis) and LOISY (Pierre de, known as ‘Pierre the Younger’): An exceptional and rare philosophical thesis printed on silk, dated in Salins, 1676, dedicated to Claude Etienne Favière (Claudius Stephanus Favière), a native of Salins. Thesis publicly defended by Father Alexis Faivre, under the supervision of Father Philibert Bruyset. The set comprises a large sheet of silk printed in black (79.5 x 56.5 cm), adorned at the top with a remarkable religious engraving by Pierre de Loisy, typical of academic defences of the period, depicting Saint Anne (S. Anna) instructing the Virgin Mary and surmounted by cherubs. The lower part features a Latin text, richly set and framed by a decorative border. This is the ‘Conclusiones philosophicae Scotisticae doctrine conformes’, organised into three main sections: logic, physics and metaphysics. This document, which is extremely rare—perhaps even unique—was intended to be displayed publicly during the defence. It shows some signs of age and slight soiling, but is very well preserved given the fragility of the textile support.
