Description
[FOURAY de BOISSELET & [CHAPOT, Hippolyte)]: A note on the former governors of Besançon (8ff.). Tokens of the banners of the city of Besançon (7 plates engraved by Chapot, containing 6 tokens per plate). Tokens of the Co-Governors of the Free Imperial City of Besançon (88 plates of tokens, some entirely engraved, others with the tokens mounted, and a few drawn). No place (1873). In-8° comprising 151 ff. (with numerous blank pages at the end) featuring a large generic title page illustrated with a composition by Hippolyte Chapot (on f. 4) and 7 ff. containing the author’s autograph at the beginning of the volume. Contemporary brown half-shagreen binding, ribbed spine decorated with cold-stamped fleurons, half-shagreen slipcase with decorative faux ribs (Laurenchet workshop). Given that the text is missing, it appears that this is Hippolyte Chapot’s collection of plates rather than Boisselet’s extremely rare work. According to an old handwritten note, this copy is said to contain 82 additional token reproductions compared with other catalogued copies. This copy has been enriched with various additional pieces by different hands. This collection is described as extremely rare by the expert I. Florange in his 1893 catalogue no. 4. Enclosed are three typewritten sheets by the expert I. Florange relating to a sale of token collections, most of which came from the late Fouray de Boisselet. This exceptional copy could well be the very one that belonged to Hippolyte Chapot. Ex-libris Dr Giafferi.
