GREVY (Jules) Appointment as President of the Republic, important official handwritten document: ‘National Assembly. Year 1879. Extract from the minutes of the sitting of 30 January 1879. It appears from the minutes of the National Assembly that, at its sitting of 30 January 1879, the Assembly appointed Mr Jules Grèvy as President of the French Republic, to replace Mr the Marshal de Mac Mahon, Duke of Magenta, who had resigned. Certified true copy: Versailles, 30 January 1879. Signed by the President, L. Martel, and the Secretaries’. Written in ink on heavy laid folio paper (33.5 x 24 cm) across two pages, bearing the National Assembly’s official circular embossed seal. A rare and valuable document of major significance for French institutional history. Jules Grévy, born on 15 August 1807 in Mont-sous-Vaudrey (Jura), died on 9 September 1891 in the same town.
