NODIER (Charles): *The Story of the King of Bohemia and His Seven Castles*. Paris, Delangle frères, 1830. An extremely rare first edition, one of only six copies printed on green paper. In-8°, 398 pp. 50 vignettes by Tony Johannot, wood-engraved by Porret, within the text. Modern half-calf with corner pieces, decorated ribbed spine, gilt head (bound by F. Saulnier). On page 69, a note gives the price and the reason for the print run: ‘Coloured paper, printed in an edition of 6 copies’; on page 35, a fictitious title page with the term ‘Pastiche’ added to the title of the edition: ‘available from booksellers who do not stock new titles’. Published in 1830, this singular text occupies a special place in the works of Charles Nodier. Under the guise of a fictional narrative, the author develops a deliberately fragmented structure, featuring numerous digressions, embedded stories and narrative devices.
