Description
Map of the Besançon Citadel A 17th-century hand-drawn folding map in period colours, in black ink and watercolour, measuring 43.5 x 83.5 cm. (Minor restoration to the margins). Modern half-calf binding, with a smooth, decorated spine, in a bordered slipcase [Laurenchet workshop]. This extremely rare plan of the Besançon Citadel is certainly a copy of the one attributed to Vauban (S. le Preste, Marquis de), which features in his collection of defensive works for Besançon held at the BnF. Produced after the fortification engineer’s death in the late 17th century, it likely originates from a dossier used and compiled by the King’s engineers who were continuing their maintenance and development work on the fortress. Handwritten inscription on the reverse: ‘map of Gibraltar, Besançon, and others drawn by hand’
