RIOND (Louis, the doctor of the poor): Folk Medicine, or the Art of Healing as Directed by Nature, third edition. Besançon, Bintot, 1842. In-8°, 342 pp. Romantic-style full red shagreen binding of the period, richly decorated with gilded motifs, plain spine and mosaic-patterned boards, adorned with a broad decorative band featuring floral and arabesque motifs; in the centre, a vase of flowers surmounted by a bird; a roulette on the inner lace-edged edges; all edges gilt (Guillaume Abich, bookbinder in Besançon). Ex-dono label in gold lettering on a red background: ‘To Her Majesty the Queen of England, Scotland and Ireland, etc., presented by the author’. Engraved bookplate by Ramolino de Coll’alto. A very fine decorative 19th-century binding, combining ornamental refinement with the high standard of craftsmanship characteristic of Guillaume Abich.
