STENDHAL (Marie-Henry Beyle, known as): *Promenades dans Rome*. Paris, Delaunay, 1829. Two in-8° volumes of Volume I: half-title page, title page, IV pp., 450 pp. + 1 engraved frontispiece of Trajan’s Column. Volume II: half-title, title page, 592 pp. + 1 f. errata, 1 folded map of the ruins of ancient Rome + 1 engraved frontispiece depicting St Peter’s Basilica in Rome. Chocolate-coloured half-maroquin with corner pieces, smooth spine finely decorated with gilded fleurons set against a red mosaic background, gilt headband; spine and covers preserved (bound by Semet & Plumelle). First edition illustrated with two engravings as frontispieces in each volume, as well as a fold-out map of Rome. This work is regarded as one of Stendhal’s masterpieces, both for its reflections on art and for its literary qualities. A very rare copy, finely bound by Semet & Plumelle, free from foxing. Engraved bookplate.
