Description
TINSEAU (Antoine) & LABET (Carolus) Map of Besançon and its territories in the shape of the Imperial Eagle, dated 1663, dedicated to Philip IV, King of Spain. Copperplate engraving (47.5 by 37.5 cm in a rigid mat) drawn by Antoine Tinseau and engraved by Carolus Labet. This extremely rare depiction of the municipal territory of the city of Besançon, comprising its capital and 100 villages, takes the unusual form of the Imperial Eagle of Besançon, whose wings rest upon the traditional pair of columns; these architectural elements serve here as a heraldic support on which are depicted the 14 coats of arms of the co-governors of the city of Besançon then in office; The pedestals are adorned on one side with the grand imperial arms of Besançon and on the other with the arms of the Marquis of Castel Rodrigo of Spain; the eagle’s plumage is adorned at regular intervals with the seven coats of arms of the city’s banners; the bases of the columns, resting on the eagle’s talons, are joined by a large scroll bearing a Latin inscription in honour of the city and its rulers.
