CASTELLESI (Adriano).
De sermone latino, et modis latine loquendi. S.l.n.d. [at colophon]: Rome, Marcello Silber, October 1515. In-folio, soft tawny basane blind-stamped, fillets and wide border executed with large juxtaposed irons, diamond-shaped panel, central medallion with radiating decoration, ornate three-ribbed spine (Italian binding of the period).
First edition of the author's main work on the reformation of the Latin language.
Interesting Italian binding, strictly contemporary. It is to be compared with that of the Valerius Flaccus of 1519 in the Henry Davis collection, which Mirjam Foot attributes with reservations to a Roman workshop (t. III, n°264). It is also worth noting the similarity of the border to that on the Philostratus of 1502 that belonged to Grolier, a Milanese binding that appeared in the Jean Grolier catalogue at the Bibliothèque nationale de France, 2012, no. 1.
Handwritten bookplate on a piece of paper pasted to the verso of the title.
Small worm gallery at the bottom of the first 8 leaves, spine redone, restoration to binding. Lining and endpapers renewed.
