Lot no. 65
CICERON.
De natura deorum. De divinatione. De fato. De legibus. S.l.n.d. [at the end]: Florence, Philippe Junte, 1516. In-8, brown morocco, antique gilt decoration consisting of a set of fillets and a roulette drawing a central rectangular panel decorated with various irons, inscription stamped at the top of the first plate C. DE NA A DEORU, spine gilt, gilt and chased edges (Binding of the period).
Florentine edition of Cicero's philosophical works, printed in italics.
BEAUTIFUL CONTEMPORARY ITALIAN BINDING.
It may be compared with the binding of the Cicero published in Florence by Junte in 1515 reproduced in the Henry Davis Gift catalogue, vol. III, no. 257, and which Mirjam Foot believes to have been executed in Venice or Bologna: it features the same small six-pointed iron with a stylised flower, which, on our binding, is stamped in the centre.
The inscription C. DE NA A DEORU at the head is a contraction of the author's name and the title: Cicero De natura deorum.
Spots on a few leaves, some foxing. Repairs to headpieces.
