Les Tableaux de la pénitence. Paris, Augustin Courbé, 1656. In-4, havana basane, triple gilt fillet, ornate spine, red title-piece, interior roulette, gilt edges (Binding of the end of the 19th century).
Second edition, after the original of 1654, of this work inspired by the paintings of Philostratus on mythology and those of Father Richeome on the Eucharist.
It is illustrated with a frontispiece, 2 bands and 22 plates, all remarkably engraved with burin by Couvay, Grignon, Boulanger, Tournier, Lochon, etc., after François Chauveau.
Antoine Godeau (1605-1672) was a member of the Académie française, a worldly prelate and a close friend of the Marquise de Rambouillet. He was bishop of Grasse and Vence.
