Description
Divided into five parts. By François de Verone, Constantin. S. l, 1595. Pet. in-8, (6) ff, 244 pp, (1) f., paper a little yellowed, fawn half calf. BRUNET V, 1146 (who attributes it to François de Verone). PEIGNOT I, 45; SHF no. 3122. First edition cited by Brunet. Jean Chastel, the author of an attempt on Henri IV's life on 27 December 1594, was condemned to the death penalty for regicides, leading to the proscription of the Jesuits that same month, who were suspected of being the instigators of his act. He was regarded as a martyr by the League, which had not accepted Henry IV's abjuration. Jean Boucher (1575-1594), priest of Saint-Benoist, one of the most militant members of the Paris League, was the author of this libel. He wanted to show that "Chastel's deed is just... is heroic", and that the Court's ruling was impertinent against him. was impertinent against him and the Jesuits. The doctrine of tyrannicide is based on the Protestants themselves, ''although they change their discourse according to the tide of their affairs''; quotations from Junius Brutus, Buchanan, Bodin (classified among the P. R.), Bèze. The author demonstrates Henry IV's incapacity, even after his alleged conversion, and refutes De la juste et canonique absolution, as well as Servin's indictment and Arnauld's plea. The book, which was published several times although banned, was a source of political discussion right up to the Revolution.
