In-folio, (16) ff, 256, 12 pp, (12) ff, 3 folding plates, numerous old annotations by a contemporary, half marble carmine with corners, spine ribbed and decorated, boards of the old binding in vellum cons. RENOUARD 128.8. ADAMS H-403. The three folding plates represent the fortress of Semiramis, the gardens and the tower of Babylon. Some copies have a fourth plate showing a general view of the city. First edition by Estienne of the translation by Lorenzo Valla (1405-1457). Also includes a Latin translation of the Life of Homer by the German humanist Konrad Heresbach (1496-1576), as well as a draft of the Apologie pour Hérodote published in French the same year in a much expanded version, intended to defend Herodotus from the accusations of falsehood long levelled against the historian.
