STRADA, Jacopo - Epitome of the Thresor des Antiquitez. C'est à dire, Pourtraits des vrayes Medailles de Empp. tant d'Orient que d'Occident . Lyon, Jacques de Strada and Thomas Guerin, 1553. In-4, (122) ff, 590 (25) pp, several russets, marbled fawn, spine ribbed and decorated (pastiche of a 17th c. binding).
ADAMS S-1918. BRUN 297 (for the original edition). First French edition of this work by the Italian antiquarian Jacopo Strada, first published in 1553 by Jean de Tournes. In his preface to the reader, Strada claims to have benefited from the assistance of Guillaume Du Choul and Jean Grolier, whose splendid library he praises. Abundant engraved illustrations in the text, containing more than 480 small woodcuts in reserve representing medals with the effigies of emperors from Julius Caesar to Charles V. Baudrier attributed their finesse to Bernard Salomon. The starting point for the Epitome was the author's own collection, enriched by numerous observations gathered during his travels, in particular from Johann Jakob Fugger, to whom the work is dedicated and whose coat of arms is reproduced.
