RENOUARD III, n°409. Edition printed by Pierre Le Voirrier for an association of booksellers including Gilles Beys. Although dedicated to King Louis XII, Claude de Seyssel's translation first appeared in Lyon in 1544. It is preceded by a "proëme" in which he sets out to prove the superiority of the monarchical state over democracy and oligarchy. He praised royalty in
France ''as all alienated from tyranny.'' He paints a complete picture of the relationship between the different classes in society. These included: the king's officers, a powerful counterweight to his authority; the nobility, who gave their blood to the country and received honours and privileges in exchange; the third estate, comprising merchants and farmers, whom de Seyssel found to be the happiest in the world: "if they pay taxes, they are protected from enemies by those who do not pay taxes; they can also, and better than the others, obtain offices and benefits. des traductions françaises d'auteurs grecs et latins, p. 16 et seq.)
