First edition, illustrated with a portrait of the author aged 33 (repeated), an allegorical fig. on pl. page representing the Allocutio pennae (repeated), the besieged fort (repeated 5 times), a frame decorated with trophies and cannons (repeated 7 times). The author was secretary to Cardinal Du Bellay, whom he accompanied to Rome in 1547 and the following years. It was there that he composed his work in 1550: ''He has brought together all the features of ancient and modern history that could be cited in praise of women.
