Description
BONNEFONS, Jean - Pancharis Io. Bonfonii Arverni. Lyon, Thomas Soubron, 1593. Pet. in-12, 68 pp. in 18th c. fawn calf, spine with ornate nerves.
INDEX AURELIENSIS IV, 122.125. BALSAMO N°169. First published in 1587 by Abel L'angelier. A collection of erotic poems in the style of Les Baisers de Jean Second dedicated to Jacques de La Guesle. The work was republished in Tours by Georges Drobet in 1593, of which this edition by Thomas Soubron is a forgery. The author was born in Auvergne around 1554 and was a lawyer in Paris under the protection of Achille de Harlay, who had him appointed lieutenant-general in the bailiwick of Bar-sur-Seine around 1584. Pancharis, the imaginary name of a mistress, is a collection of amorous poems which placed him above all the poets of his century. (Bound in the following pages, as is often the case:) DURANT, Gilles, Sieur de la Bergerie - Imitations du latin de Jean Bonnefons avec autres gayetez amoureuses de l'invention de l'autheur. Idem, 153 (1) pp. paper a little yellowed. The fruit of a literary friendship, the Imitations de la Pancharis de Jean Bonnefons par Gilles Durant et autres gayetés du même appeared together with Jean Bonnefons for the first time in 1587, never to be separated again in the successive editions which attest to their success with contemporaries. Both were compatriots from Auvergne and both were renowned lawyers. Gilles Durant, born around 1550 in Clermont, was one of the nine lawyers chosen to reform the customs of Paris. He is also known for his participation in the Satyre Ménippée with the famous Lamentation sur l'Ane Ligueur. The first part, entitled Imitations du Latin de Jean Bonnefons, is a free translation of Bonnefons' Pancharis.
It is an anthology of erotic poems, whose Gallic poetry combined with a certain tenderness is not lacking in charm. The Gayetés de Gilles Durant that follow contain songs, sonnets, odes and stanzas, most of them dedicated to Charlotte, whom he calls his island of chaste rock, but also to friends of the author: Cl. Binet, Fr. Miron, J. Bonnefons, Fr. Grelière de Macefer.
