Description
MONTREUX, Nicolas de - Les Amours de Cléandre et Domiphille. Par lesquelles se remarque la perfection de la vertu de Chasteté. A book no less delectable than profitable to all true lovers of Chastity. All from the invention of Ollenix du Mont-Sacré, Gentilhomme du Mayne. Paris, widow of Gabriel Buon, 1597. In-12, (12) ff, 369 (1) f., fawn calf, smooth spine decorated with gilt thread, gilt edges, slight tears in the quires. BARBIER-MUELLER IV, 4, 337. First edition. Ollenix du Mont-Sacré is the anagram of Nicolas de Montreux. Dedicated to the Duke of Mercœur without his name appearing, Duke of Brittany and protector of the author, both supporters of the League. This novel is the second part of his trilogy entitled: L'OEuvre de la chasteté. Montreux follows in the footsteps of Héliodore and Achilles Tatius, but influenced by the Amadis of Gaul, he recounts in a more contemporary style the exploits of the knight Cléandre, embellished with numerous sonnets addressed to his lover Domiphile.
