Description
YVER, Jacques - Le Printemps d'Yver: Contenant cinq Histoires, discourues par cinq journees, en une noble compagnie, au chasteau du Printemps. Paris, Jean Ruelle, 1572. In-16, (8) ff. 395 (5) ff. paper yellowed, a few light spots, title a little rubbed, 18th c. red morocco pl., triple gilt thread on boards, smooth spine decorated, gilt tr. DE BACKER 343. First edition. Like Boccaccio, who imagined his tales based on a gathering of young people fleeing the plague in Florence, Yver created a similar company who, tired of the civil wars, took up residence in a château in Saintonge. Their five stories were in the tradition of Italian storytellers such as Bandello, who, popularised by Belleforest and Boaistuau, were very much in vogue at the time. In their stories, the narrators address the question of relations between men and women: Fleur d'amour gives all the blame to women; Marie gives all the blame to men; Bel-Accueil, holding the scales equally between them, gives all the blame to fortune; Marguerite to envy; Ferme-Foy, to the petty quarrels that arise between men and women (V.-L. Saulnier). The work, which went through no fewer than thirty-three editions until 1635, was a milestone between the Histoires tragiques from Italy and the sentimental novels of the following century.
