Description
COQUILLART, Guillaume - Les Poésies de Guillaume Coquillart, Official de l'Eglise de Reims. Paris, Antoine-Urbain Coustelier, 1723. In-12, (3) ff, 184 pp, (2) ff, 18th c. red morocco, triple gilt thread on covers, spine ribbed, coat of arms at tail, gilt tr.
TCH II, 521. VIOLLET LE DUC 88. ''This edition is the most correct of all those made of the works of Coquillart.'' We have no details on the life of this poet; we only know that he was an official, i.e. a judge at the ecclesiastical court of Reims, and that in this capacity he attended the coronation of Charles VIII in 1484. His works were first published in 1532. In a style reminiscent of Rabelais, the author deals with new customs, fashion and good manners. There is a plea between two women who are fighting over a lover, about the need for a prince to indulge in war or love. With the arms of Choiseul Stainville (OHR 818). Ex-libris Robert Hoe, Mortimer Schiff, Daniel Sickles.
