Description
BINET, R. P. Estienne, s. j. - Meditations affectueuses sur la vie de la tressainte vierge mère de Dieu. Anvers, Martin Nutius aux depens de Theodore Galle, 1632. Pet. in-12, (18) ff. including title-front, 131 (1) pp. 33 engravings by Charles de Mallery after Theodore Galle, trimmed a little short, ivory vellum.
BRUNET I, 946. SOMMERVOGEL I, 1500. FUNCK 279. Dedicated ''à la Roine du Paradis.'' The approval is dated Antwerp 7 February 1632. Born in Dijon in 1599, Estienne Binet entered the Society of Jesus in 1590 in Novellara (Italy). In 1603, when Henry IV recalled the Jesuits, he returned to France and played an important role in the affairs of his Order. Successively provincial of the three provinces of Paris, Lyon and Champagne, he intervened with skill and moderation in the controversy over the Regulars (1623). Fr Binet was particularly active in the Counter-Reformation and his name is associated with the most important episodes in the renewal of religious life in the seventeenth century. He is a major representative of Christian humanism and the French Baroque.
