HAAG II, 309. CAILLET 1235. DORBON 382. First edition. Blondel (1590-1655) was regent of the college at Sedan, pastor at Houdan and succeeded Vossius as professor in Amsterdam in 1650. ''In this treatise, Blondel takes issue with the oracles of the Sibyls and proves that they were the work of some impostor who lived in the first centuries of Christianity. According to him, the Fathers could not have been unaware of the imposture, and if they made use of these alleged predictions, it was because they regarded as good all the means likely to ensure the triumph of their cause'' (Haag).
