Description
BROWNE, Thomas - The Physician's Religion, i.e.: Necessary Description of His Opinion in Accordance with the Pure Divine Service of England. S. l. (Amsterdam, Blaeu), Printed in 1668. (12) ff. including front, 360 pp. yellowed paper, 18th c. red morocco, boards and spine decorated with cold wires, gilt. WILLEMS 1784. KRIVATSY 1852. KEYNES (Browne) n°71. First published in English in 1642 and in 1643 with the author's assent. First edition in French, based on the Dutch version published in 1665. It is said to have been written by a certain Nicolas Lefebre, a chemist and pharmacist who came to England in 1660 to help King Charles II in his laboratory, where he remained until his death in 1674. According to Willems (no. 1784) it was printed in Amsterdam by Blaeu, while others think it was printed in The Hague.
