Description
CALLIÈRES, Jacques de - Le Courtisan prédestiné, ou le duc de Joyeuse, Capucin. Dedicated to Mademoiselle. Paris, Gilles André, 1662. In-8, (8) ff. portrait of the Duc de Joyeuse engraved after K. Audran, 586 pp. Audran, 586 pp, (2) ff, several yellowed quires, bas. racinée, double gilt thread on boards, spine ribbed and decorated. First edition. Romanticised history of this ligueur who made peace with Henri IV in exchange for a marshal's baton. This is the most popular of the accounts devoted to Père Ange (the religious name of the Duc de Joyeuse) which, according to Brémond (II, 146), is more of a novel than a history. Father Angel had previously inspired devout humanism. Phiippe d'Angoumois, one of the co-founders of the Company of the Blessed Sacrament, devoted a work of over 1000 pp. to him: Triomphe de l'Amour. Triomphe de l'Amour divin dans la conversion d'Hermogène (le Duc de Joyeuse), Paris, 1625.
