CHARRON, Pierre - On Wisdom. Livres trois. Bordeaux, Simon Millanges, 1601. Pet. in-8, (10) ff, 772 pp, (4) ff, the pagination jumps from 752 to 757 without missing, paper browned, trimmed short at the head with sometimes the running title indented, 17th c. tawny calf, spine ribbed grotesquely decorated, upper head resting, small tears and epidermis.
TCH II, 253. First edition, 1st printing. DESGRAVES (Millanges) n°164. The only edition seen by the author and offering the most authentic state of his thought. Fearing the rigours of the Sorbonne, Charron prepared a second modified edition which appeared in Paris in 1604 after his death (see F. Strowski, Pascal et son temps I, 175). Apart from the 1607 edition, the latter served as a model for all subsequent editions, more or less expurgated. La Sagesse was considered to be the breviary of libertines.
