Description
DAMPMARTIN, Pierre de] - The Fortune of the Court. A curious work taken from the Memoirs of one of the principal advisors to the Duke of Alençon, brother of King Henry III. Paris, Nicolas de Sercy, 1642. In-8, (24) ff, 599 pp, (2) ff, contemporary ivory vellum. 3rd edition. The first appeared in 1585 under the title "De la connaissance et merveilles du monde et de l'homme"; the 2nd in 1592 in Antwerp, under the title "Le Bonheur de la Cour". The latter was written by Sorel, who added a preliminary discourse and is said to have continued the work until the death of the Duke of Alençon in 1584, rejuvenating the style. The author, Dampmartin, initially attached to Jeanne d'Albret, was Attorney General to the Duke of Alençon and Governor of Montpellier under Henry IV. His book is one of the rare accounts of the court of the Duke of Alençon, brother of Henry III. Contemporaries readily associated it with the memoirs of Queen Marguerite. This whimsical and ambitious prince was surrounded by cavaliers of refined elegance, intellectuals like Guillaume Du Vair, but also cynical and ferocious adventurers. The worst of them all, the favourite, Bussy d'Amboise, is featured throughout "Fortune of the Court".
