Description
DYKE, Daniel - The Probe of Conscience, by Daniel Dyke, once a minister of the word of God. Translated from the English by Jean Vernueil. Premiere edition françoise. Genève, Charenton, Samuel Petit, 1634. In-12, (18) ff, 753 pp, title yellowed, limp vellum, cords. HAAG IX, 470. Et. Jouy, Bulletin du Bibliophile, 1909, pp. 433-446. First French edition of a work first published in London in 1614. Its author was a Puritan minister who, as a result of persecution, had to abandon his ministry and retire to Saint-Albans where he acquired a great reputation as a preacher. Jean Verneuil, born in Bordeaux in 1585, fled to England for religious reasons, where he served as assistant librarian at Oxford. La Rochefoucauld drew heavily on this work to compose his Maximes. The central theme, the guiding idea, is the same in Dyke as in La Rochefoucauld. It is the study of the fallen man, of the man dominated by self-love, by interest, or rather by what he regards as his interest.
