In-4, (12) ff. including the frontispiece, 4 full-page figs showing 21 species of trees and one of brambles, the key; 322 pp, (1) f. (privilege), tear on last f. without missing, frontispiece trimmed at the spoon, paper a little yellowed, half red long-grained marble, with corners, circa 1830, smooth spine decorated with gilt and cold wires. First French edition, in the translation by the academician Jean Baudoin (1564-1650). The English original is entitled Dendrologia, Dodona's Grove, or, the Vocall Forrest (London, 1640) and was written by James Howel (ca 1594-1666), an Anglo-Welsh historian and writer. An allegorical satire of European states in the first half of the 17th century. Political and satyrical discourse against all the powers of Europe, under the name of different trees. England, for example, is designated by the oak; France, by the vine; Spain, by the olive tree; the Empire, by the cedar; the Pope, by the ivy; the ecclesiastics, by the yew; Turkey, by the bramble.'' 5 engraved plates, including 3 by the Italian artist Stefano della Bella, and 2 engravings by Claude Mellan and Abraham Bosse, including a full-length portrait of James Howel in a forest.
