Description
LA PORTE, M. de - Mémoires de M. de La Porte, premier valet de chambre de Louis XIV. Contenant plusieurs particularités des règnes de Louis XIII et de Louis XIV. Genève, 1756. Pet. in-12, 324 pp. in contemporary granulated brown calf, spine ribbed and ornamented, upper cuff remaining.
SHF 724. 2nd edition cited. After spending a few years in Saumur, he was recalled to court in 1643 and appointed valet de chambre to the young Louis XIV; in this privileged position, he was especially concerned with making Mazarin odious to the regent and the king. The all-powerful cardinal forced him to relinquish his position in 1653. He was not to be pardoned until 1666, but played no further role. He recounted the adventures that befell him at court during his service there, and was thus led to describe the people and intrigues of the kings' entourage.
