LE LOYER, Pierre - Edom ou les colonies Iduméanes - Colonies d'Hercule phenicien, et de Thyr. Paris, Nicolas Buon, 1620, in-8, (14) ff, 249 pp ; 141 pp, (1) blank f., (7) ff, paper a little yellowed, contemporary vellum, spine lined in 18th c. (ornate fawn bas.).
CAILLET II, 6455. First edition dedicated to King James I of England. Le Loyer (Huillé en Maine-et-Loire, 1550 -Angers, 1634) was a famous demonologist and author of the Quatre Livres des spectres ou apparitions (Angers, 1586). In Edom, he asserted that all words come from Greek or Hebrew. He proposed numerical equivalences to prove the correspondence between French and these languages. He claimed to demonstrate, through etymology, that the Angevins were descended from Esau! He was in regular contact with the Oratorian father Marin Mersenne, one of the greatest scholars of the time. Mersenne was half admirer and half sceptic of some of Le Loyer's assertions: "He had strange insights and secrets into the Rabins and the Hebrieu [sic]" (letter of 1 September 1635), "he used a certain kind of cabal of which he often wrote to me" (letter of 19 December 1645) (see DBF XX, 1391-1392 and Nodier, Mélanges pp. 323-326).
