Description
MANUSCRIT] - ANTOINE, Jacques - Relation de la mort du Roy Louis treize. (Added in another hand:) Par mr. antoine escuier garçon ord.re de Lachambre du Roy en 1643. S. l. n. d. (Saint-Germain-en-Laye?), before 1665 for the Relation de la mort du roi. In-4, 161 pp, (3) ff, pp. 74-75 and 80-81 in duplicate, neatly written, text ruled in red, contemporary brown calf, spine ribbed with mute, headpieces rest.
Copy possibly made in Saint-Germain-en-Laye as an early note states: ''This present book belonged to Mr. Antoine ecuyer porte Arquebuse du Roy demeurant à St. germain En Laye.'' The latter, the author's son, left a reworked copy preserved at the BNF (Manuscripts, N.a.f. 5012, new acquisitions) dated 1728. The account of the king's death at the Château-Neuf de Saint-Germain-en-Laye runs from 21 February to 15 May 1643 and concludes with his epitaph. It is much more extensive than in the son's version, which, no doubt for reasons of convenience, toned down all the embarrassing aspects of the king's agony, particularly the physical ones. Jacques Antoine was a zealous servant from the time of the king's birth in Fontainebleau (27 Sept. 1601) and accompanied him on all his travels, in particular for his marriage to Anne of Austria (Bordeaux, 25 Nov. 1615), at the siege of La Rochelle (1628), in Montauban (1630), etc. (3 ff.) It was published in 1880 by Alfred Cramail: Fragments du journal de la maladie et de la mort de Louis XIII par Antoine, garçon de la chambre du Roy (47 pp.) leaving the present manuscript largely unpublished.
