MAZARINADES] - . . In-4, 58 Mazarinades, contemporary marbled fawn calf, double gilt thread on covers, spine ribbed and ornamented, headpieces remain. MOREAU 3814. The text presents a political remonstrance affirming the principle of a monarchy where a single sovereign holds authority, and warning against the excessive influence of private individuals on royal power. There are several editions of this text, with variations in form and content, some anonymous and others enriched with appendices. The supposed author is President Le Coigneux, according to rumours reported by Guy Patin. MOREAU 1147. The text presents a very violent pamphlet of the Fronde, which attacks both the Parlement and a prince, with a prophetic tone announcing their fall and the vengeance of the people. The author is identified as Portail, a councillor in Parliament who was involved in the political conflicts and polemical publications of the period. The text also discusses the legal proceedings connected with its publication, the controversies surrounding its attribution, and the contrasting judgments made about Portail, who is sometimes described as a skilful and eloquent writer, and sometimes in very disparaging terms in other pamphlets. Paris, composed by Misère and printed in Calamité, 1649, 72 pages. MOREAU 533. The text presents a satirical pamphlet featuring eight peasants representing different regions of France, who formulate admonitions in the form of political articles. They propose various reforms affecting the nobility, the army, foreigners, finance, the Church and the organisation of the State, often in a critical and mocking tone. The pamphlet is notable for its sharp wit and political reflections, denouncing abuses and injustice in the operation of the monarchy and its institutions. It is also appreciated for the quality of its style and its rarity. MOREAU 2406. This pamphlet comments on and extends the Manuel, denouncing flattery and the excesses of royal power. It criticises absolute power, defends a better political framework and the idea of representative assemblies, while attacking financial abuses and partisans. Despite its polemical tone, it is considered well-written and relevant, without being particularly rare. Paris, Arnould Cottinet, 1649, 8 pages. MOREAU 790. There is another edition, also of 8 pages and of the same date, but without the name of the place. This is apparently the one that Saint-Ange took from Robert Sara (Mascurat, p. 636). Naudé, however, quotes the title of the play incorrectly. It should not have read Contribution du bon citoyen. A good and vigorous pamphlet which it is always prudent to take when one finds it, even though it is not very serious. Paris, Arnould Cottinet, 1649. MOREAU 1106 describes a 1649 pamphlet in several parts and its various editions. He points out that the first speech, considered to be the best, criticises the political situation after the events of 1648 and in particular criticises Mazarin and the court for their unworthy behaviour and lack of religious respect. The rest, attributed to Dom Pierre de Saint-Joseph, is a satirical denunciation of financial abuse, corruption and the excesses of power. - Treaty of peace between His Catholic Majesty and the States General of the United Provinces of the Netherlands. Jouxte la copie imprimée à Bruxelles. Paris, Jean du Crocq, 1649, 32 pages. Dated Munster, 30 January 1648. MOREAU 3798. - Pourpre (la) ensanglantée. Paris, 1649, 11 pages. MOREAU 2836. MOREAU 3732, etc.
