Description
ROHAN, Duc de - Les Mémoires du Duc de Rohan (à la sphère). (Amsterdam, Louis Elzevier), 1644. 2 parts in one vol. in-16, (1) f., 229, 135 pp. pl. red morocco, ribbed spine, int. dent. gilt.
WILLEMS 1016. SHF II, 706. First edition of these memoirs, published by Samuel Sorbière. The second part contains : Le Véritable discours - Le Réglement général - Le Cayer de l'Assemblée de Saumur - (et) La Response. A son-in-law of Sully, Rohan was, after 1610, the recognised leader of the Protestant party and, while constantly declaring himself to be a supporter of conciliation, he took part in revolts against the royal authority: after 1620 especially and until the peace of Alais in 1629, he was a dangerous condottiere who did not hesitate to ally himself with Spain, but who also knew how to sign an accommodation with the king. When he saw that the Protestant cause was definitively lost and that Cardinal de Richelieu was firmly resolved not to allow a state within a state to be formed in France, he preferred to become the condottiere of Venice rather than submit. It was only later, in 1633, that he returned to the service of France, and was entrusted by Richelieu with leading the war in Valtellina, where he waged some memorable campaigns. But the Cardinal's distrust forced him once again to disobey and seek his fortune elsewhere: he went to join Bernard of Saxe-Weimar and, fighting with him, was mortally wounded at the siege of Rhinfelden."
