First edition, written in prose. It was written at the request of Cardinal de Richelieu. The author is best known for La Pratique du Théâtre (1657), to whose theories the play conforms. It depicts the tragic fate of the heroic Queen of Palmyra (v. 266-272). Defeated by the Emperor Aurelian, despite his esteem, she ends up taking her own life.
