BRUNET I, 575. FRERE I, 56. LACHEVRE (Poésies libres et satiriques) 82. CIOR 9028. Second enlarged edition also dated 1627 (first 1623). Poet from Rouen, supposedly born around 1580, whose works were published in Rouen from 1608 to 1636, where he practised as a surgeon. He was a friend of his regular printer David Ferrand, who published the famous gazette La Muze Normande. He died around 1630, and his work is divided into two distinct areas, one religious (Oeuvres Sainctes, 1626) and the other satirical. Dedicated to Charles Maynard, President of the Parliament of Rouen, the satires are written in a very free style in the form of saucy or fishy poems evoking the world of Gautier Garguille or Angoulevent, but sometimes they take on a more serious tone. He approved of Saint Bartholomew's Day, made a few insults to the Calvinists of Montauban, composed a Complainte de la France en l'an1615, Stances présentées à la reine à Blois en 1615, and a Discours des songes à Mr. Bérault médecin, which was intended to be philosophical. This first edition is followed by l'Innocence descouverte, a tragi-comedy in five acts, first published in Rouen in 1609. Former malicious critics have claimed that Racine used it to compose Phèdre. Ex-libris E.-M. Bancel. This collector, who dispersed his library in 1882, bequeathed a painting by Jean Perréal, Les Fiançailles de Charles VIII, to the Louvre in 1884.
