Description
BEYS, Charles - Les Oeuvres poétiques. Paris, Toussainct Quinet, 1652. In-4, (20) ff. including title and frontispiece, 260 p. engraved frontispiece trimmed as always; this unidentified one seems to be by Abraham Bosse, contemporary gran. brown calf, spine ribbed and decorated, headpieces rest.
VIOLLET LE DUC 471. LACHÈVRE I 101. DE BACKER n°722. First edition. Charles de Beys (Paris 1610-1659) was probably a lifelong devotee of the fair sex and good food (Lachèvre). The introductory pieces contain twelve sonnets, stanzas and epigrams addressed to the author by Scarron, Guillaume and François Colletet, Jean Royer de Prade, Tristan L'Hermite, Georges de Scudéry, Gabriel Gilbert, and others. These pieces testify to the keen admiration that Charles Beys (1601-1659), who composed some of his poems at the age of fourteen, aroused among his contemporaries.
