Description
Paris, Au Mont Parnasse, c. 1700. 2 vols. in-12, 350 pp. (5) ff. ; 340 pp. (4) ff. yellowed paper, russet, red morocco, triple gilt thread on covers, smooth spine decorated, gilt tr. LACHEVRE (Poésies libres et satyriques) 53. Last early edition cited by Lachèvre, attributed to Lenglet-Dufresnoy. The Cabinet Satyrique first appeared in 1618, with additions and retrenchments in 1620, and was widely distributed during its early years (1621, 1623, 1627, 1632, 1634...). Its glibness and obscenity were tolerated, but in 1623 Parliament ordered proceedings against the authors of the Parnassus of satyric poets. A large part of the collection is made up of satires by Sigogne, governor of Dieppe, who died in 1611. P. de l'Estoile says of his administration "that the government of a stud farm of bitches ... would have been cleaner than that of such a town: so he had succeeded in this pimping and dirty traffic of this merchandise. He is the author of Stances satiriques contre la fameuse Perrette, which is a satire against Mlle De Tillet, an old love broker mentioned by Tellement de Réaux. The Combat de Régnier et de Berthelot, satirical poets that took place in 1607, shows that poets were not afraid to come to blows. The second most numerous author is Pierre Motin, who died in 1610 and was for a time one of the official suppliers to the Court ballets. One of his most cited pieces is his Elégie contre les femmes. He is also the author of : Chasse de la puce sur la belle Uranie; Le Ballet des biberons; Regret sur le trépas d'une de plus fameuses maquerelles de la cour. Mathurin Régnier's plays include Discours d'une vieille maquerelle; Stances contre un amoureux transi; Sur le portrait d'un poète couronné, p. 490. His most famous satire (no. XIII) published in the 1612 collection found a response here: Proverbe d'amour à la fameuse Macette (p. 28). By François Maynard, Malherbe's favourite disciple, we have retained: Satyre contre les petits gentilhommes champêtres, the most quoted. From Guillaume Bautru: L'Onosandre ou la croyence du Grossier, a satire against the Duc de Montbazon. By the famous Vauquelin des Yvetaux: Mélanges à Monsieur l'Abbé de Thiron, Vers d'un courtisan disgracié. Berthelot, who was caught up in the wave of persecution against Théophile de Viau, is the author of : L'Eloignement de la Cour ; Lettre envoyée à un Marquis ; Le Sénateur trompé par sa femme. We should also mention plays by Du Souhait, Desportes, Ronsard, Racan, author of, among others: Ode bachique à Monsieur Maynard, président d'Orillac and the famous Sur un mauvais logis. A curious piece is entitled: Impuissance de Remy Belleau not printed in his works. Rapin is the author of : Le Douche aux Dames qui vont boire de l'eau des bains de Pougues pour faire des enfants. An anonymous piece brings to life the colourful atmosphere of the Saint-Germain fair: Description de la foire Saint-Germain-des-Prés.
