Description
CHAPOTON, François - Le véritable Coriolan, tragédie représentée par la Trouppe Royale. Paris, Toussainct Quinet, 1639. Pet. in-12, (7) ff, 152 pp, front missing, paper a little yellowed, fawn calf, smooth spine decorated. Second edition (the first 1638 in-4). Dedicated to Cardinal de Richelieu, this tragedy was performed at the Hôtel de Bourgogne. It is preceded by verses in praise of Rotrou, Colletet, Regnault, Beys, Baudoin and Mareschal. Composed in rivalry with Urbain Chevreau's play performed at the Hôtel du Marais, it is taken from Plutarch's Lives of Illustrious Men. The life of Coriolan also inspired Shakespeare (1608) and Alexandre Hardy (between 1623 and 1628).
