DESHOULIÈRES, Antoinette Du Ligier de La Garde, dame - Poësies. Paris, vve de Sébastien Mabre-Cramoisy, 1688. In-8, portrait added, (2) ff. (title and one blank f.), 220 pp. and (6) ff. in midnight blue morocco, triple gilt thread on covers, spine with ornate nerves, int. dent, gilt tr. (HARDY-MESNIL ?). TCH II, 807. LE PETIT 426. LACHÈVRE, Le Libertinage au XVIIe siècle (Disciples et successeurs de Théophile de Viau) 115. First edition. Antoinette Deshoulières (1638-1694), was a friend of Fléchier, Benserade, the Duke of Nevers, Thomas Corneille, Quinault, Charpentier; hostile to Racine, she took an active part in the "Phèdre quarrel"; she was one of the muses of the camp of the Moderns. Until her conversion in the last years of her life, Madame Deshoulières embodied a particular aspect of seventeenth-century libertinism. In her work, she was above all concerned to criticise society - she saw in it only the triumph of money and ambition. The solid education she had received and her knowledge of the philosophies of Descartes and Gassendi enabled her to express in some of her plays her feelings about the way things are, the weaknesses of our reason and the waywardness of passion (See Dictionnaire des Littératures, Bordas I, 627; A. Adam, Hist. de la littérature française, V, 303)
