Description
DU RYER, Pierre - Esther, tragedy. Paris, Antoine de Sommaville & Augustin Courbé, 1644. In-4, (2) ff, 122 pp, (1) f., half calf, spine ribbed and decorated. First edition. Du Ryer (1600-1658) was initially the protégé and secretary of the Duc de Vendôme, grandson of Henri IV. A playwright, he was fashionable enough to be compared to Corneille, against whom he was elected to the Académie française in 1646. The subject is taken from the eponymous book of the Old Testament. Du Ryer knew how to attract his audience with the scenic qualities of his plays, their romance and gallant intrigues, traits also present in Esther. It undoubtedly aroused Racine's interest.
