Description
DU RYER, Pierre - Saül, tragedy. Paris, Antoine de Sommaville & Augustin Courbé, 1642. In-4, (4) ff. of which the front, 110 pp, (1) f., light spotting, trimmed a little short with damage to the outer margin of the front, burgundy half calf (BELLEVALLÉE).
LANCASTER II, 1, 348. First edition. With Esther, Du Ryer attempts to revive the religious tragedy in France which had disappeared in the previous century. Created probably in 1640, the main source is the First Book of Samuel, enriched with details taken from Flavius Josephus and Jean de La Taille's Saul the Furious. Like La Taille, Du Ryer dramatises the hero's death and the events that precede it. What Du Ryer does better than anyone else is to retrace the history of his hero's soul, from the moment he begins to fear being abandoned by the Almighty until his suicide.
