Description
HOUEL DE RESNEVILLE, Guillaume - Les Traverses du Sieur de Resneville et ses oeuvres poétiques. Paris, Toussainct du Bray, 1624. Pet. in-8, (4) ff. 268 pp. in garnet morocco, spine ribbed, inside serrated, gilt tr. (BELLEVALLÉE). ARBOUR n°218. First edition. The author was born in Caen towards the end of the 16th century. He suffered a sentimental disappointment and witnessed a duel in Paris in which he was unjustly accused of being one of the protagonists. He had to flee to Holland and served for seven years in the army of Maurice de Nassau, Prince of Orange. His innocence acknowledged, he returned to France and published his poems on the vanity of poets, love, the return of spring, his disgrace, his travels, the death of the Marquis de Beuvron, etc. (V. Gouget t. XV, pp. 149-155). The first fifty-eight pages are taken up by a gallant story, followed by poems introduced by a frontispiece depicting a crossed sword and pen with this exergue: Je me sçay fort bien escrimer // De celle qui me donne à vivre // Et de l'autre, assez exprimer // Les malheurs que le sort me livre. // Ceux qui s'entendent à rimer // En peuvent juger par ce livre.
