Description
JACQUES, Jacques - Le Faut-mourir et les excuses inutiles que l'on apporte à cette nécessité. All in burlesque verse. Rouen, François Vaultier, 1658. Pet. 1n-12, 166, 255 pp, (2) ff, pl. havana morocco, ribbed spine, int. dent. gilt (HARDY).
The first edition of Le Faut-mourir by Jacques Jacques, canon of Embrun cathedral, was published in 1657. Its author, still alive in 1680, left a fairly large number of works on morality and piety, bizarrely treated in burlesque verse. ''This often printed and most popular work is the last repercussion of the old traditions of the Danse macabre, and consequently a rather curious document for the history of thought and for that of the arts.'' (Nodier).
