Description
LE PETIT, Claude - Les plus belles Pensées de St Augustin, prince et docteur de l'Eglise, mises en vers françois par C. Le Petit. Paris, Jean-Baptiste Loyson, 1666. Pet. in-12, (12) ff. the last one blank, 119 pp. in brown calf, spine ribbed and ornamented, headpieces remain. VIOLLET LE DUC 524. LACHÈVRE III, 410. Posthumous first edition. Claude Le Petit (1639-1662), a libertine poet, was condemned to death for blasphemy and his body burnt in the Place de Grève. Viollet le Duc quotes a long extract from the preface of a certain Du Pelletier, dated Paris, 27 February 1666, which bears witness to Claude Le Petit's religion: "The beautiful paths of the garden of Saint-Victor, where one can see the traces of a large number of excellent characters, have often been the witnesses of some pious discussions that we have had together (...). These verses which he entrusted to me, and which I give to you, will speak better than I can of this truth; they will tell you that his thoughts were not always criminal''.
