DE BACKER n°675. First edition. Claude de Malleville, (1597- 1647), was secretary to the marshal de Bassompierre, then to the cardinal de Bérulle, to the Swiss and even to the king at the grand chancellery. He was a member of the small circle of literary figures who met at Conrart's house on a regular basis. He was one of the most appreciated guests at the Hôtel de Rambouillet, where he contributed to the famous Guirlande de Julie, in which each madrigal was named after a flower, and which the Marquis de Montausier gave to Julie-Lucine d'Angènes, demoiselle de Rambouillet. The author of elegies, chansons and stanzas, he is best known for his sonnets, and his Belle Matineuse was often preferred to that of Voiture. But, if we are to believe Boileau, Malleville's sonnets are rarely flawless: ''A peine dans Gombault, Maynard et Malleville // En peut admirer deux ou trois entre mille.''
