Description
In-12, (12) ff, 212 pp, (2) ff, two figs. engraved in intaglio, one h. t., paper a little yellowed, trimmed a little short, fawn calf, double gilt thread on covers, spine ribbed and decorated, coat of arms at tail.
Born in Vauréas in 1626, he became a Carmelite after the death of his beloved. This epic poem was composed following a vision he had during a pilgrimage. No poet has brought together more discordant images and burlesque inventions. The nightingales are animated lutes, flying sirens; the trees, amiable rodomonts. Madeleine, having climbed a rock, begins to practise grammar in front of the cross: ''While she is busy punishing the forfeit//Of her preterite tense which was only imperfect//Time for which the future will repair the losses//Through time of afflictions and sorrows suffered//And the present tense is such that it is the indicative//Of a love which goes as far as the infinitive/And then, through an optative, ah! would to God, she said/that I had never been so criminal. With the arms of Gitton du Plessis, a bibliophile of the late 19th century (OHR pl. 510). Ex-libris F. Renard.
