Description
RAYSSIGUIER, N. de] - Tragicomedie pastorale, où les amours d'Astree & de Celadon, sont meslees à celles de Diane, de Silvandre & de Paris, avec les inconstances d'Hilas. Paris, Pierre David, 1632. Pet. in-8, (16) ff, 259 pp, paper a little yellowed, 18th c. marbled fawn calf, spine ribbed and decorated, supralibros on first board. Second edition. Among the introductory pieces are two poems by Du Ryer, a friend of the author, and one in Latin, possibly by Benserade. One of the theatre adaptations from Urfé's novel, along with those by Jean Mairet (for example, La Silvanire, 1631). Rayssiguier chose to stage the two main themes of the work: the story of Astrée and Céladon and that of Diane and Silvandre. Rayssiguier, who is thought to be an original from Castres, a town not far from his model's Forez region, was a close friend of Cardinal de Retz. (V. Lancaster I, 346). Ex-libris and supralibros of Frédéric Lachèvre.
