Description
ROTROU, Jean de - Amélie. Tragi-comedie. Paris, Anthoine de Sommaville, 1638. In-4, (2) ff, 108 pp, paper a little yellowed, fawn half calf, spine ribbed and decorated, gilt tr.
TCH V, 511. First edition. The heroine's father wants to force his daughter Amélie to marry a certain Eraste against her will. Amélie then leaves with her lover, Dionis, pursued by Eraste; but a stranger interferes: it is Cloris in disguise, the mistress whom Eraste thought dead and with whom he is still in love. The happy ending is a double wedding. It was in this play that a new character appeared on the Parisian stage for the first time: the "Capitan", a buffoon who was both boastful and deflated (Guichemerre p. 32).
